How to measure and choose your size

📏 How to Measure & Choose Your Size

📏 1) Measure your width (rear of tray)

  1. Go to the back of your tray.
  2. Put the tape on the floor at the rear, against the inside of the left wall.
  3. Pull it straight across the floor to the inside of the right wall and read it in millimetres (mm).
  4. If you have liners, rubber edges, trims, or rails, measure between those, not the bare steel or aluminium.
  5. If you get two readings (not perfectly square), use the smaller number.

Pick your width size:

  • Choose the next size down in 20 mm steps between 1680–1820 mm.
  • Available sizes: 1680, 1700, 1720, 1740, 1760, 1780, 1800, 1820.
  • Examples:
    Measure 1770 mm → select 1760 mm
    Measure 1827 mm → select 1820 mm

↕️ 2) Pick your height (950 mm vs 1100 mm — simple rule)

  • If your headboard height is ≤ 950 mm: order 950 mm (no need for extra height).
  • If your headboard height is > 950 mm: order 1100 mm (extra height) and trim down to match.

Examples:

  • Headboard 920 mm950 mm
  • Headboard 980 mm1100 mm (trim to ~980 mm)
  • Headboard 1040 mm1100 mm (trim to ~1040 mm)

Trimming tip: After cutting, seal exposed ends with cold-galv spray.

How to install

🧰 Building & Installation (Simple)

  1. Place the feet on the tray floor at the rear where the rack will sit.
  2. Set the same setback from the rear edge: measure the distance from the back of the tray (tailgate line) to each foot and make both sides identical so the feet sit parallel to the back. (e.g., 60 mm on left and 60 mm on right)
  3. Use the feet as templates: hold each foot in position and mark the bolt holes through the foot plates onto the tray floor.
  4. Drill the marked holes to suit the supplied bolts.
  5. Bolt the feet down using the included 8 mm and 6 mm bolts, washers, and lock nuts.
  6. Drop the uprights in (rack posts slide into the feet).
  7. Clamp the uprights with the 35 mm × 12 mm bolts (into the welded nuts on each foot).
  8. Insert the top pins using the 140 mm × 12 mm bolts; secure with the washers & lock nuts.
  9. Slide on the orange PVC tubes over the 12 mm bolts to prevent scuffs.
  10. Tighten everything and check it’s straight before loading.

Quick tips:

  • For extra squareness, measure diagonals between foot corners—matching diagonals = square.
  • If you trim height, seal cuts with cold-galv spray.
  • Re-check all fasteners after your first drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does the Ladder Rack come with both feet and all mounting hardware?

Yes. Every Ladder Rack kit includes both mounting feet and all required hardware — bolts, nuts, and washers — everything you need to complete the installation.

No extra fittings or brackets are needed; it’s ready to install straight out of the box.

2. Will it fit my Ute tray or tub ?

Yes. The rack adjusts to fit most trays up to 1,820 mm wide and yes it can be reused on other utes if the ladder rack fits.

Check space if you have a tonneau cover, canopy, or toolbox to make sure everything clears.

3. Do I need to drill into my tray or tub ?

Yes. It needs to be bolted through the tray or tub for a strong, safe fit.

It can be removed at anytime with the tension bolt in each foot to have your tray open fully within a matter of minutes.

4. What tools do I need to install the ladder rack ?

Install time: about 30–45 minutes using:

  • 13 mm socket & spanner
  • Ratchet or socket spanner
  • Tape measure for alignment

Complete Removal of feet takes around 10–15 minutes with the same tools.

All bolts, nuts, and washers are included.

5. What steel is it made from, and how much weight can it hold ?

Built from 40×40 mm square steel tubing with wall thickness options of 2 mm, 3 mm, or 4 mm:

  • 2 mm: holds up to 400 kg evenly spread load. this ladder rack weighs 8.5 kg including feet
  • 3 mm: holds up to 550 kg evenly spread load. this ladder rack weighs 12 kg including feet
  • 4 mm: holds up to 700 kg evenly spread load. this ladder rack weighs 14.5 kg including feet

6. Will the ladder rack or bolts rust ?

No. The rack is made from fully galvanised steel, giving complete rust protection inside and out.

The tube ends are open so water can drain out freely, and the mounting feet have small drainage openings cut into them to let water flow through without getting trapped.

These openings don’t affect the strength or durability of the rack.

All bolts are zinc-plated high-tensile steel, adding even more protection against corrosion — perfect for long-term outdoor use.

If drilling into Steel trays, seal any bare metal to prevent rust from forming around bolt holes.

7. Does it rattle or affect fuel use ?

When fitted tightly, it stays quiet and solid — no rattles or shaking.

Like any rack, it can add a little wind drag, but it’s barely noticeable.

Re-check all bolts after the first week, then every few months or after rough use for best results.

8. What can I carry on it and how should i tie my load down ?

The Ladder Rack is built for work and adventure — strong enough to handle almost anything long or bulky.

Common uses include:

  • Ladders and scaffolding
  • Timber, steel, and PVC conduit
  • Roof-top tents and awnings
  • Kayaks, canoes, and surfboards
  • Camping gear and recovery tracks
  • Pipes, framing, or building materials

If it fits safely and is tied down properly, the rack can carry it.

Always secure your load with AS/NZS 4380-approved ratchet straps or rated tie-downs.

Check and retighten straps on long trips. Never exceed your vehicle’s rated load capacity.

9. What are the legal rules for overhang and visibility in Australia ?

All states in Australia use the same rule:

Your load can’t stick out more than 60 % of your wheelbase or 3.7 m from the rear axle, whichever is less.

If it sticks out over 1.2 m past the tray, you must attach a red flag (day) or red light (night) so it’s clearly visible.

Always keep your lights and number plate visible.

10. What if parts are missing ?

If any parts are missing from your order, contact us straight away at sydneywesthire@gmail.com

or call 0404 919 797.

We’ll organise replacement parts and get them sent out to you as soon as possible — free of charge.

11. What could void the guarantee, and how long will it last ?

The guarantee won’t apply if the rack is modified, welded, overloaded, or damaged by misuse.

With correct installation and care, customers report years of use without issues. Just check our reviews!

12. Do you ship Australia-wide ?

Yes. We freight all over Australia, including regional and remote areas.

All orders are securely packed and shipped with Direct Freight Express for their reliability, speed, and tracking accuracy.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your location and item size, and tracking details are sent once your order is dispatched.

13. Where are your ladder racks made ?

All of our ladder racks are 100% Australian made right here in our Sydney workshop.

Every part is designed, cut, welded, and finished locally, using Australian-supplied steel and hardware from trusted local companies.

By keeping production in-house, we maintain full control over quality, strength, and finish — ensuring every rack meets the highest standard before it leaves our shop.
